Nominations requested by the NPSA on behalf of the four UK Health Departments
Date Posted:13/09/2011

We have been asked by the NPSA on behalf of the four UK Health Departments to nominate expert representatives to sit on the Independent Advisory Groups (IAGS) which oversee each of the four Clinical Outcome Review Programmes (previously known as the Confidential Enquiries). The terms of Reference for the IAGs are attached. Please note that the programmes cover the whole of the UK and the IAGs will comprise representatives from all four countries.

The programmes are:

  • Medical and Surgical
  • Mental Health
  • Maternal and New born
  • Child Health

Colleges and Faculties are therefore asked to propose members for the Academy to forward as nominations for consideration.

To be clear:

  • There will be 5-7 representative experts in total on each group.
  • Those chosen will be on the group because of their personal professional expertise rather than as the representative of their nominating body
  • The final selection of representatives will be made by the four CMOs from the nominations submitted by a range of organisations

There is no guarantee that the Academy nominee(s) will therefore be successful

UK Epilepsy Research Network Forum
Date Posted:09/03/2011
Wednesday 21 September 2011

The first UK Epilepsy Research Network (UKERN) will take place on Wednesday 21 September 2011, at the University of Aston, between 10:30 and 16:00. We envisage that about two thirds of the meeting will be spent discussing projects in the developmental stage, and about one third discussing projects that have been recently funded and are getting off the ground. The day will include three/four sessions, each overseen by a different panel of UKERN members. During each session people will be given the chance to present their ideas to the other delegates. There will then be time for questions, comments and suggestions from the audience, chaired by the panel.

We would like to invite you to take part in this day, by presenting a project or by contribution to the discussion. We would be particularly delighted if you were to volunteer to present a project, and in order that we may structure the day in advance, we ask that you send your project title and idea to Delphine van der Pauw (delphine@eruk.org.uk) by Friday 17 June 2011. You should identify the relevant gap in research, your research question, any hypotheses you have and your intended method. This will help us identify the most appropriate people to sit on the panel. It is our intention that all submitted ideas be presented, but this will depend on the number of responses we receive.

We do hope that you will accept our invitation and we look forward to hearing from you. Please respond to Delphine by Friday 8 April 2011.

Milosh Perovitch Travel Grant
Date Posted:21/07/2010
Application Deadline - 30th Sep 2010

Milosh Perovitch was a Yugoslav physician who spent several years of his academic career in the Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in the 1960's and 1970's. Upon his death in 2006, he made a bequest to the JHMI Neuroradiology Division who have decided, in view of Dr. Perovitch's close ties to Europe, to offer reverse sabbaticals to Europeans willing to visit Johns Hopkins for a period one to two months. The goal of the visit will be to exchange knowledge and develop collaborations. The stipend would be used to defray the visitors' expenses for the month as a travel grant. Expenses over the allotted amount ($12,500) would have to be covered by the grantee.

The Division of Neuroradiology is now accepting applications for a visit for calendar year 2011. The application process is a 1-2 page letter addressed to David M. Yousem, Division Director, detailing:

  1. Proposed material (educational, clinical, research) to be exchanged with Johns Hopkins Faculty and fellows and residents in the area of neuroradiology
  2. If appropriate, proposed technique (interventional or otherwise) which could be taught/shared
  3. Months of availability in 2011 and length of stay requested (up to one month)
  4. Contact information for one professional reference.

Please include a CV and any reprints or PDF files appropriate for us to evaluate the proposal.

Decisions will be made based on merit and a vote of the JHMI Neuroradiology faculty.

Deadline for receipt of application for 2011 is September 30, 2010. Decisions will be made by November 30, 2010.

Neuroimaging survey on brain imaging in society
Date Posted:21/07/2010

The Scottish Imaging Network, A Platform for Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE) research group together with Edinburgh Neuroscience, Legal experts and the Scottish Parliament are currently hosting a programme of workshops to debate the potential wider impacts of brain imaging on society, such as its increasing use in the courts, as a lie-detector, for mindreading or in marketing research or national security.

For example, many will not be aware that there have been at least 90 cases in the USA and several in Europe where fMRI results or subtle structural brain imaging features have been used in capital punishment cases either to try to get a sentence reduced or the person convicted and executed! (not so far in the UK). Or that the Home Office tried to scan prisoners to determine if their rehabilitation had worked and they were safe to release.

We are seeking people’s opinions and concerns about these issues in a short survey.

There are two surveys: One aimed at the lay public and the other aimed at people who already use neuroimaging in their work (whether medical or other).

We would be grateful if even a few members of the BSNR could complete either survey, and even better if they could distribute it to friends and family and colleagues in their hospitals. Each one only takes a few minutes and it is more entertaining than the usual circular (at least in our hospital!).

18th Zurich Course on Interventional Neuroradiology
Date Posted:16/06/2010

It is a great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 18th Zurich Course on Interventional Neuroradiology to take place from 26 August until 29 August 2010 at the University Hospital of Zurich. Traditionally, the Zurich Course emphasizes the links among clinical presentation, anatomic background and endovascular techniques, based on dedicated lectures, video-workshops and extensive discussions between the participants and the Course Faculty. As the field of interventional neuroradiology has matured over the past three decades, long-term follow-ups are becoming availabe, which allow us to appreciate better the real advances which have been achieved but also the persisting limitations and the need for further development. These issues will be integrated and discussed in each main topic of the Course.

This year, the Course will again cover almost the entire spectrum of endovascular interventional neuroradiology with special emphasis on acute and preventive stroke treatment, management of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and of complex intracranial aneurysmal vasculopathies, devascularization of angiogenetically active skull base and intracranial tumors as well as therapeutic endovascular applications for AV-shunts of the central nervous system.

Obituary - Dr Ross Paxton
Date Posted:25/05/2010
Society members will be sad to receive the news of the death of Dr Ross Paxton, a Senior Member, who has recently died aged 66. Ross served as a Neuroradiologist to the Plymouth hospitals between 1975 and 1997, when forced to retire due to ill health. Although not a founder member of the society Ross was certainly one of the longest established figures in British Neuroradiology. He worked with James Ambrose at Atkinson Morley's hospital in the early 1970s when clinical applications of Computerised Tomography were established and introduced. More senior members will remember the very successful annual meeting hosted by Ross at Plymouth in 1979. Ross is survived by his wife, Pat and their two daughters.

Passings: Dr Nick Messios
Date Posted:26/11/2009

It is with a sad heart I write to inform you and the members of the BSNR of the death of Dr Nick Messios, consultant neuroradiologist to the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. As many members will know Nick has quietly and courageously fought a long and hard battle against cancer. This battle ended last Saturday morning. Nick was a stalwart of Leicester radiology for many years. He will be remembered with great affection and respect by generations of radiologists who have trained in Leicester, and consistently voted the 'neuro' attachment into first place. He will also be remembered by his colleagues in neuroradiology, neurology, neurosurgery and ENT both here in Leicester, and also in Nottingham where he had strong professional links and many friendships.

It was Nick's wish to be buried in Cyprus. I will inform members of the Society if there is to be a Service of Thanksgiving for his life, here in Leicester.

In remembering Nick, I am reminded of what Winston Churchill once said: - We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
